Copper Inlaid Gourd Shard Necklaces
These unique pendants are made out of embossed copper, inlaid into a gourd shard. Some of them have bone beads, others have pyro-engraved scenes. All are on an adjustable cotton necklace and signed by the artist on the back. Click on images below to see different pieces. The designs are Hawaiian symbols or petroglyphs from our petroglyph fields. Each one is $45. Very tribal and unique.
Bamboo Tile Necklace
Pyroengraved motif of bamboo on gourd tile. This is on an adjustable cotton cord. This is similar to the tiles I make for the hatbands.
Kalo Leaf Tile Necklace
This is a kalo or taro leaf engraved onto the gourd tile. The necklace comes with a black adjustable cord.
Honu 1 Mana Necklace
These honu or turtle necklaces are one of my best sellers because the honu is extremely popular to the locals here in the islands. Beautiful tribal carvings bring powerful mana to the wearer.
Honu of Ancient and Modern Hawai`i: The Honu is the Hawaiian symbol of longevity, peace, humility, fertility and the spirit within. The honu is considered a symbol of the island (the word for land is 'Aina honua). They have a saying "land is like a turtle, as it moves on", meaning that it passes slowly but inexorably from owner to heir. The honu are featured in Hawaiian mythology, petroglyphs and as 'aumakua (personal family gods).
An 'aumakua could manifest itself in varying forms such as a shark, a sea turtle, a hawk, a lizard, a pueo (owl) or any other animal, plant or mineral. Members of the family were said to recognize their 'aumakua, no matter what form it chose, whether it be an insect on land or a crab in the ocean the following day. The ancestral god might appear in a dream to furnish guidance or spiritual strength in difficult times. When a fisherman or craftsman was especially successful, credit was often given to his 'aumakua for intervening with the principal gods to impart the Mana (Spiritual Power) that enabled an earthly being to develop such skill. Many a canoe paddler has told of being lost or in danger between the islands, only to be guided by his Honu 'aumakua to a safe landing.
The turtle is a revered symbol throughout Polynesia, depicting the wisdom that comes with age and the wanderer or traveler. It is said to represent a very wise person with a love for the sea and a passion for traveling and exploring the wonders of the world. It is also like the Albatross in that its skill in navigating the wide ocean is legendary.
Ulu Leaf Necklace
The ulu or breadfruit is very close to Hawaiians hearts. Back in early Polynesian time, breadfruit had reached the Hawaiian islands near 750 AD, and over the centuries contributed quietly to just about everything the Hawaiians needed to survive. The trunk was used to make surf boards, drums, canoe parts, poi boards and wood for house and furniture construction. The inner bark lent itself as a second-grade tapa cloth. Leaf sheaths, like the finest of abrasives, polished utensils, bowls, or kukui nuts used for leis. The young buds were a medicine for mouth and throat. The white sticky sap became glue, caulking, chewing gum, or medicine. As bird lime it caught the colorful birds with their coveted feathers. And of course breadfruit filled the stomach of many Hawaiian.
Fish Hook 1
This hook is made out of gourd with the Hawaiian tattoo designs to make it truly Hawaiian, not Maori or Tongan. Each one is so unique it can't be replicated even by myself. They are about 1 1/2" tall with a polished cotton adjustable cord.
